Contractor gives government minister $65,000 loan

Posted: Wednesday, March 10, 2021. 3:02 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: During the first half of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the sale of government assets, held in Belmopan today, contractor Juvencio Herrera testified that he gave a $65,000 loan to former government minister Hugo Patt to purchase a vehicle.

The vehicle in question is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma that has been the subject of discussion for several weeks at the COI.

Herrera testified that Patt had confided in him that he wanted to purchase the vehicle from the Government of Belize, but that it cost $65,000 – Patt did not have the money at the time.

Herrera went on to say that he had known Patt for around two years and had become friends, so he offered to loan Patt the money, which he secured by borrowing it from his employer Kevin Lee.

The vehicle was bought and placed in Herrera’s name, but he said that Patt informed him that he could not pay back the $65,000, so Herrera had the vehicle resold.

Also testifying this morning was Ivan Liva, who served as the medium for Patt and Herrera meeting. Liva testified that Herrera came to the apartment complex that he owns several times a year to conduct repairs, and there he met with Patt who also visited the complex from time to time.

Liva testified that he assisted Herrera in the resale of the vehicle, and turned over the $65,000 from the resale without counting the cash, rather he simply handed the money over.

More from the COI later.
