By BBN Staff: The Fisheries Department announced today that Sea Cucumber season is set to open on Monday, March 15.
The Department advised that only fisherfolk with valid fisheries licenses will be able to take advantage of the season, which runs from March 15 up to June 30, 2021. The department also noted that the season may end prior to June 30 if the catch quota is reached before that time.
The Fisheries Department also noted that fishers will only be allowed to harvest sea cucumber in their authorized fishing areas as prescribed in the commercial fishing license; fishers should deliver/sell their catch to sea cucumber export permit holders only (Fishermen Cooperatives and Fein Catch Limited), and that fishers should harvest and possess sea cucumbers with a minimum total length of 10 inches (live animals) or with a minimum weight of seven ounces or greater.
“Fishing vessel owners and/or vessel captains must maintain a catch log record and must submit this data to the sea cucumber buyer/exporter at the end of each fishing trip,” the Fisheries Department said. “The fishing season shall be declared closed once the catch quota has been realized or by June 30, 2021, whichever comes first.”
Those seeking more information are urged to call the Fisheries Department at 224-4552 or 223-2187.
