Study says Pfizer vaccine shows promise against Brazilian coronavirus variant

By BBN Staff: A new study is claiming that the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE is proving to be effective against the new variant of the coronavirus that is spreading in Brazil, reports Global News.

The study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Monday, says that the vaccine was able to neutralize the new variant in a limited trial.

A team of scientists from Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE and the University of Texas Medical Branch tested an engineered version of the virus that contained the same mutations carried on the spike portion of the highly contagious P.1 variant first identified in Brazil and found that it was effective.

“The scientists said the neutralizing ability was roughly equivalent to the vaccine’s effect on a previous less contagious version of the virus from last year,” Global News said in a recently published article. “The spike, used by the virus to enter human cells, is the primary target of many COVID-19 vaccines.”

The Pfizer vaccine has also been found to neutralize other more contagious variants first identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa; however, the South African variant may reduce protective antibodies elicited by the vaccine.
