A year later, World Health Organization struggling with COVID-19 pandemic response

By Zoila Palma: Today makes 1 year since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic.

WHO maintained that the virus could be stopped before declaring COVID-19 a pandemic.

Just as leaders around the world are grappling with COVID-19 response, WHO is struggling to keep on top of the science of COVID-19.

According to a report from Yahoo News, in its early decision-making processes, WHO made some ‘missteps’ by advising people against masks and declining to call out countries for mistakes made.

The organization faces a huge responsibility in trying to call for equitable access to vaccines as there is a worldwide scramble for vaccines that could leave millions unprotected.

In January 2020, WHO called COVID-19 an international health emergency, but it wasn’t until it was declared a pandemic that governments began to take action.

WHO has launched an investigation into the origins of the virus.

WHO is now lobbying for people in poorer countries to have access to the COVID-19 vaccine through the COVAX initiative.
