By BBN Staff: Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, Oscar Requena, visited neighborhoods in Punta Gorda and promised Mayor Charles Selgado that he would help the Town Council in “executing their plans to improve public services and revitalize the town overall.”

The Government of Belize Press Office said that the promise came at the meeting between Requena and the Punta Gorda Town Council on Tuesday, March 9, 2021, in Punta Gorda.

Minister Requena and his Chief Executive Office Valentino Shal, met with Selgado and other newly elected Town Council members “to identify potential areas of collaboration in order to improve the delivery of services to Punta Gorda residents,” said the GOB Press Office.

Selgado and the councilors told Requena that the town’s infrastructure had long been neglected and that upon assuming office they found the Council’s finances in a “weak state.”

The GOB Press Office said that the new Town Council “shared their plans to address these issues and improve the governance of their municipality” and that “the Ministry shared with the Mayor and the Council ongoing projects under the Ministry in which they have an opportunity to participate.”

These include improving financial management mechanisms, redefinition of municipality boundaries, and an integrated motor vehicle licensing system.

The Press Office also said that after the meeting Requena visited areas of Punta Gorda to get “a first-hand look at the state of the town’s infrastructure and services which need urgent improvement,” and that’s when he and CEO Shal “pledged to support the Council in executing their plans to improve public services and revitalize the town.”
