By Zoila Palma: On Wednesday, Mexican lawmakers approved a marijuana legalization bill opening the way for the country to become one of the world’s largest legal marijuana markets, The Associated Press reports.
The legislation that is to return to the Senate would allow for recreational use of marijuana, but establish a system of licenses required for the entire chain of production, distribution, transformation, and sales.
Those wishing to grow plants for personal use would also need to acquire a permit.
Those with permits would be allowed to have 6 plants with a max of 8 per household.
Those caught with more than 28 grams would be fined and those with over 12 pounds could face jail time.
The final stages of the legislation are still evolving.
Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has since expressed support for moving the legislation forward.
Other lawmakers that are in favor of the bill claim that it will move the marijuana market out of the hands of Mexico’s drug cartels.
Since 2017, medicinal marijuana has been legal in Mexico.
