By BBN Staff: The Nurses’ Association of Belize (NAB) announced today that it stands with the Public Service Union and all other unions in saying “No” to the 10 percent salary cuts proposed by the Government of Belize (GOB).
The NAB said that GOB can find other ways to address Belize’s economic crisis without cutting salaries and called for the government to enact legislation that will criminalize the wasting and mismanagement of public resources.
“We request that all ridiculous allowances be abolished and make lower-paying interest rates available to all public officers with a clear cause to disregard refinancing charges,” the Association said.
The NAB also took issue with recent statements made by Prime Minister John Briceno, about the level of sacrifice or lack thereof that public servants have made in the national effort towards economic recovery, categorizing the statements as “utterly disrespectful.” The association stressed that nurses have been sacrificing since the start of the pandemic, with many of their allowances already removed.
“As we speak many nurses have not been paid overtime hours due to them for months now, yet we continue sacrificing self and family to cover hours due to the extreme shortage of staff within our hospitals,” the NAB added.
The association further said that it does not support retrenchment of any kind in the medical field as it will affect the delivery of care to patients. The NAB has called on all nurses to wear yellow shirts every Friday until further notice as a show of solidarity to their position.
