Southern Workers Union calls on Government to re-open abandoned Commerce Bight Port

Posted: Saturday, March 13, 2021. 9:08 am CST.

By BBN Staff: This week, the Southern Workers Union (SWU) renewed its call to the Government of Belize (GOB) to reopen the Commerce Bight Port, located some 1.5 miles south of Dangriga, which had been abandoned since 2017.

The union issued a statement on Wednesday saying that the port is vital for job creation and economic development in Dangriga and demanded that GOB resume meetings regarding the reopening of the port by April 28, 2021. The SWU also demanded that GOB implement the recommendations set forth by the Recological System Limited (RSL), the organization which the government had entered an agreement back in June of 2018 to re-open and develop the Commerce Bight Port.

In addition, the SWU is asking that government expedite the Power Purchasing Agreement between Belize Electricity Limited and Sea One LLC, which it says will bring more economic growth to the south.

The SWU had been petitioning the former United Democratic Party administration and even the People’s United Party when it was in opposition, to see that something is done about re-opening the port.
