Spring forward: Daylight savings time to be observed in U.S. starting Sunday morning

By Aaron Humes: It is that time of the year again for most of the United States, and later this month, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

Clocks in these countries and many others move forward one hour on Sunday morning, March 14 at 2 a.m. in a practice known as Daylight Savings Time (DST).

According to the Washington Post, the time shift loses Americans an hour of sleep but means longer evenings for the next eight months up to early November, when the time “falls back” to standard time.

Some legislators have proposed dropping standard time and keeping DST year-round, with legislatures in 15 states from Florida to California passing such bills. However, Congress must approve changes to DST in conjunction with the Department of Transportation.

Opponents say that the twice-a-year clock change disrupts sleep schedules, increases the incidences of car accidents, heart attacks, seasonal depression and other issues, but making DST permanent has its own problems: daylight hours would be shorter and mornings would be darker in the winter, which worries parents who have to send their kids to school at that time.

The U.S. has observed the current version of DST since 1975 after using year-round DST during both World Wars and in the mid-1970s during an energy crisis.

The Mexican version puts the Yucatan Peninsula, including Chetumal, an hour ahead of Belize between April and October, while the UK version puts Belize seven hours behind rather than six for the same period.

Belize, which is in the Central time zone, is one hour behind New York City (Eastern), on the same time as Chicago (Central), an hour ahead of Denver and Houston (Mountain) and two hours ahead of Los Angeles (Pacific). On DST, this shifts to two hours behind New York, one behind Chicago, same time as Denver and Houston, and one hour ahead of Los Angeles, which affects mostly television programming beamed in from those areas.

Belize last observed DST in 1983, so there will be no need to change the clocks here; at this time of year the Sun begins to rise much earlier than normal and set later.
