Belize featured on Italian travel site as a must-visit tourist destination

Posted: Sunday, March 14, 2021. 2:35 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Italia a Travola, an Italian travel site, has listed Belize among its top picks for a vacation destination in Central America, further solidifying Belize’s place as a must-visit destination in the region.

In a recently published travel writing piece, which translated to “A holiday in Central America between the beaches and the culture of the Maya,” Italia a Travola entices its readers into a Belizean vacation by presenting some of the country’s marvelous Maya ruins.

“When it comes to Mayan ruins, Belize is certainly in first place both for the quantity of sites it hosts and for their remarkable conservation. In fact, the country hosts more than 600 sites including Xunantunich, Caracol, Lamanai, Cahel Pech, Altun Ha and Lubaantun. Caracol, in the Cayo district, was the largest Mayan City in Belize: today, it is possible to observe Cana, a 42-meter high pyramid,” the site said.

The feature is notable as Belize tries to rebuild its tourism sector, which suffered last year and early this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also notable as Belize is not focusing any marketing campaigns in Europe at this time.

Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler, at a recent press event, noted that the Belize Tourism Board and its partners are focusing on markets such as Mexico and Latin America, which are more accessible markets under the current state of global travel.

“It is difficult with the borders closed and limited access to this part of the world or to Europe to get anything from Europe. So it doesn’t make sense spending a lot of money in Europe right now,” Mahler said.
