Belize Telemedia Limited refutes allegations of mass firings

Posted: Monday, March 15, 2021. 5:30 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The government-owned Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) said today that there have not been any mass firings at the company, contrary to reports made by Hot Off the Press that alleged the termination of 100 employees.

The company condemned the report saying that it was “utterly false, misleading, defamatory,” and that it lacked any professional journalistic expression due to its bad reporting.

BTL said that it is going through a normal review process of contracted employees with a view to optimize its operations and noted that 20 of its staff members have contracts expiring at the end of March.

“Just as any other organization, BTL has been impacted by the economic headwinds created by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in structural overcapacity as well as the reduction in its business operations,” BTL said.

The company noted that several members of staff opted to take an early retirement package offered in February 2020, because of the benefits afforded under the incentive. The company concluded by thanking its employees for their dedication to ensuring the company maintains its operations despite the economic challenges.
