By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The postponed Tokyo Olympics do not start until July 23, but the traditional Olympic Torch relay gets underway on March 25 but without fans, said the Tokyo 2020 Olympics organizers.
Promising to hold a very safe event and due to public pressure because of a fear that COVID-19 might spread, the organizers have announced their intention of banning foreign spectators to the Olympic Games.
For now, the Tokyo Olympics organizers said the torch relay will start in Fukushima on March 25. The torch lighting Grand Start ceremony and the first section of the relay on day one will be done without fans in an attempt to avoid more cases of COVID-19 in a country that has had good control of the coronavirus with only 8,500 deaths so far.
The Tokyo 2020 organizers statement said they are “committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch relay by taking countermeasures to prevent the spread of any infections among spectators, torchbearers, staff, and other relay participants, as well as local residents.”
The Olympic torch will be lit with the Olympic Flame by members of the Japanese women’s national football team at the J-Village training center in Fukushima where the relay will takeoff on its 121-day run around the world.
The Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8 and the Paralympics from August 24 to September 5.
