By Zoila Palma: Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) issued a statement on Monday condemning ‘bad reporting by Hot off the Press’.
BTL said that the report was ‘false, misleading and defamatory’.
Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams has since issued a statement urging all media houses to be more responsible in reporting.
“Another case of false reporting by the media. While it is clear that some are satisfied with giving the media and unfettered right to broadcast, this kind of reporting is inconsistent with civilized society. It will give the media the power to slander and defame citizens and it will also allow them to turn gossips and rumors into facts,” Williams said.
Williams said that the right to free press must never be suppressed or restricted, neither must the media be intimidated or threatened for doing their job.
However, Williams reiterated the need for the media to be accurate and responsible in reporting.
“No media house or personality must see themselves as being immune from the law. It is with this spirit that we simply ask of our media house to just be more responsible in reporting, try do so investigation at times before reporting on something and do not take any gossip as reliable information,” Williams expressed.
