Teachers Union holding motorcades countrywide to show rejection of salary cuts

Posted: Tuesday, March 16, 2021. 9:39 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) is holding motorcades across the country this morning, to send a signal that its members reject the salary cuts being proposed by the Government of Belize (GOB).

In Belize City, the motorcade will be leaving off from the Marion Jones Sporting Complex and move through St.Thomas Street, Freetown Road, Central American Boulevard, Cesar Ridge Road, Regent Street, Queen Street, New Road, Douglas Jones Street, Vernon Street, Magazine Road, Cemetery Road, Orange Street, and Albert Street, ending at Yarborough.

During the BNTU’s media rounds last week, the union noted that GOB is not acting in good faith, expecting teachers and public officers to suffer a salary cut while Heads of Departments, Chief Executive Officers and Ministers enjoy benefits, that it finds unnecessary during a time of austerity.

Negotiations with the government over proposed cost-cutting measures continue.
