Women in Sugar- BSI builds capacity in women farmers!

Posted: Tuesday, March 16, 2021. 4:05 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: The Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI), through its Cane Farmer Relations Department hosted a 2-day capacity-building forum for women from the north involved in the sugar industry of Belize.

BSI noted that the forum was organized after conducting interviews with women farmers in the industry who indicated they were interested in learning about the commercial agreement, cane prices and pests and diseases affecting sugarcane.

On Monday, the capacity building session took place at SIRDI and today, it was hosted at Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association.

The sessions had representation from all four (4) cane farmers associations: Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association, Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association, Northern Sugar Cane Growers Association and Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association.

Some activities included training on the commercial agreement and cane price documents, and the use of multiplatform messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

There was also a motivational speech on women leadership delivered by Dionne Chamberlain Miranda (Consultant) and on display was a joint booth from SIRDI and BSI Ltd. on cane pests and diseases.

BSI shared that at the end of the sessions, women farmers shoed interest in the organization of more capacity building forums and commended the positive actions being taken by sugar industry stakeholders for the greater inclusion of women, and women in leadership roles, in the northern sugar industry of Belize.
