By Benjamin Flowers: BBN has confirmed with senior government officials that the Briceno government made the decision a short while ago to postpone the upcoming budget presentation.
Earlier we reported that Prime Minister Briceno had been considering delaying the budget as negotiations over cost-cutting measures are still ongoing with the joint union negotiating team.
No date has been set as yet but it will most likely be sometime in April.
The major delay in the negotiations is the government’s proposal to cut salaries for teachers and public officers by 10 percent across the board, in an effort to save some $60 million.
The unions have said that they are prepared to discuss taking the salary cut but that government must exhaust all options first, which include enacting good governance legislation, addressing waste spending of public funds, and doing away with unnecessary allowances for Ministers, Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Departments.
