By Zoila Palma: The Nature Conservancy (TNC) along with other organizations are collaborating to launch the Belize spiny lobster fisheries improvement project.
In 2019, the nature conservancy partnered with both National Fishermen Producers Cooperative Society Ltd. and Northern Fishermen Cooperative Society Ltd, Future of Fish, and private and government-sector partners to implement a combined triple impact Fisheries Improvement Project with Future of Fish’s Fishery Development Model (FIP+FDM).
The FIP+FDM has acquired the participation of Belize Fisheries Department; Belize Department of Cooperatives, Wildlife Conservation Society, the University of Belize World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association, Environmental Defense Fund, Oceana, MAR Fund, and Belize Fishermen Cooperative Association.
The organizations say that 1 of the main goals of Belize’s FIP is to coordinate and continuously promote the collaboration of national and international stakeholders of the Belizean lobster fishery to work on improvement across environmental, social and economic components of the fishery.
“The FIP will also help to create change environmentally, socially and economically within the lobster fishery by 2025; and will help build social and economic capacity within Belize’s fishermen cooperatives,” a release said.
The program will be officially launched in Belize on March 25, 2021 at 10 a.m.
According to Program Director for TNC Belize, Julie Robinson, the objective of the meeting is to “bring together various stakeholders of this important fishery and to promote engagement with fishers and fishing communities in this initiative.”
The event will feature discussions and presentations on the following topics:
Traceability and Tech-Based Enforcement
Impact of Covid on Belize Fisheries Sector
Role of Cooperatives
