By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize will be paying Vista Plaza Limited $420,000 over the next five years to rent office space for Prime Minister John Briceno and the unions have pointed to wreckless spending as one reason it is unwilling to accept a 10 percent salary cut.
The five-year agreement is for space at a building located at Mile 3.5 on Philip Goldson Highway. The rent on the office space is $7,000 a month, and the contract runs from January 2021 to December 31, 2025. The Ministry of Public Service, Constitutional and Political Reform, approved the latest payment under the agreement just last week.
Notably, the joint union negotiating team discussing cost-cutting measures with GOB, recently stressed at a press conference that the government spends too much money on renting office spaces when there are government-owned facilities such as the Laing Building in Belize City that can be utilized.
The unions say that the amount government spends on office rentals is one of several reasons why teachers and public officers are reluctant to take a 10 percent salary cut, as the government is being irresponsible with its resources.
