Spring breakers in Florida ‘forgot about pandemic,’ Mayor says

Posted: Thursday, March 18, 2021. 10:49 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Spring breakers have been visiting Miami and other destinations in Florida.

But, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber told USA Today that the spring breakers may have forgotten that there is a pandemic.

Despite the restrictions due to COVID-19, police had to disperse crowds with pepper balls. The crowds were gathered around officers making an arrest.

During the arrest of a young man, the crowd began becoming “aggressive toward officers,” the police report said.

Over 150 arrests were made over the last 7 days, police say.

The Mayor said that the spring breakers moving about freely is like a “triple threat” because too many people are going to Miami with a desire to go “wild” and COVID-19 is still out there.

The city has since shut down several streets.

Gelber also said that he has observed many people not wearing masks or adhering to precautionary measures.

Since the beginning of March, new COVID-19 cases in Miami have been between 800 and 1900.
