By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mexico is imposing restrictions on non-essential travel at its borders with Belize, Guatemala, and the Unites States of America as of today.

“The Mexico Foreign Ministry announced restrictions on non-essential travel, the border is not being closed,” Mexican Embassy press officer Paulina Merino told Breaking Belize News today.

The Mexico Foreign Affairs Ministry said the restrictions on travel and sanitary measures will be in place until midnight on April 21, 2021 but did not specify what non-essential travel signifies.

Merino said the Mexican Embassy will give details when the Mexico Foreign Ministry makes a further announcement.

Mexican Daily Milenio had said Wednesday that Mexico was closing its Southern and Northern borders.

Additionally, Milenio reported that the Mexican government was putting sanitary measures in place at border points.

“To prevent the spread of COVID-19, Mexico will put in place as of March 19, 2021, restrictions on land travel for non-essential activities at its Northern and Southern borders,” the Mexican Foreign Ministry said on Twitter.

The Mexico Foreign Ministry said the restrictions on land travel for non-essential activities are being imposed in Mexico’s Southern and Northern borders. That means its borders with Belize, Guatemala, and the Unites States.

The decision by the government of Mexico comes on the heels of an announcement by the United States that it was also putting restrictions on non-essential travel to Mexico and Canada in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The US government had advised its citizens not travel to Mexico during spring break, a period when many young Americans travel to tourist beach destinations in Mexico. The advisory by the US Embassy in Mexico was done in light of the high number of COVID-19 cases in Mexico.
