Right Honourable Said Musa marks 77th birthday

By Aaron Humes: After an eventful year, former Prime Minister of Belize Right Honourable Said Musa turns 77 today.

Son and formerly fellow parliamentarian, Kareem Musa, marked the occasion on social media by posting a photo of the pair at the National Assembly, taken a year ago.

His accompanying message read: “One year ago we took this photo on the steps of the National Assembly, celebrating your birthday while championing the cause of our Belizean people. One year later I am so very grateful that you are still with us to share your wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love. Wishing you a Happy Birthday Dad!  We love you!!”

The Fort George area representative suffered a stroke less than two months later, resulting in necessary oral surgery and forcing him to retire and give up his seat in the House of Representatives in September.

Both Kareem and Fort George successor, Henry Charles Usher, won their constituencies in the November general election and were appointed to major Ministries in the Cabinet of Prime Minister and former Musa deputy John Briceno. 

On the occasion of National Service Day in September, Briceno awarded Musa the party’s George Price Lifetime Achievement Award as approved by the National Party Council, and led a formal tribute to him on his retirement.

But Musa’s voice has not been silenced in the public sphere, as he has publicly endorsed the Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade of Cuba for the Nobel Peace Prize, joined the Coalition of Caribbean Leaders for Peace (CCLP), and wrote U.S. President Joe Biden to insist on ending the embargo against Cuba.
