The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) will conduct a listing exercise countrywide starting on Monday, March 22

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) will be conducting a listing exercise countrywide over a three-week period from March 22 to April 11, 2021.

The SIB says that the listing exercise is a field activity done randomly to gather information to update the Institute’s register of households, businesses, and institutions.

The SIB divides the country into what they term as enumeration districts which are smaller working portions within each district. The enumeration district normally encompasses 150 households making it a manageable working area for teams that are assigned to gather information. It further ensures that interviewers collect the data accurately.

The SIB listing or updating exercises are done frequently to keep the statistics up to date.

During the listing exercise that starts on Monday, March 22, people in households in 53 enumeration districts will be asked to provide their address, the name of the head of the household, and the composition of the household in terms of sex, that is how many males and how many females reside in it.

This time around interviewed persons will be asked to provide a contact number for the SIB to do their workforce exercise, which includes questions about economic activity, in April by telephone. Due to COVID-19 that will not be in person because the interview is longer due to the amount of information that is asked.

The SIB uses the data from the subsequent labor force survey to determine the level of employment and unemployment.

The SIB said in a press release that it “assures respondents that all field staff is working under an oath of secrecy and that the information provided will be kept strictly confidential. Each fieldworker will wear a vest bearing the SIB’s logo and will be equipped with an official photo identification card issued by the Institute.”
