World Health Organization: ‘AstraZeneca vaccine has tremendous potential to prevent infections’

Posted: Friday, March 19, 2021. 1:10 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: Following numerous reports of countries temporarily suspending the use of Oxford- AstraZeneca vaccine, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the vaccine’s benefits outweigh the risks.

WHO’s safety panel said that data from AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 shot do not point to an overall increase in clotting conditions.

“The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (including Covishield) continues to have a positive benefit-risk profile, with tremendous potential to prevent infections and reduce deaths across the world,” the WHO’s global advisory committee stated.

The panel of 12 independent experts met virtually and reviewed data from Europe, the United Kingdom, India, and WHO’s global database.

The panel said that it is not certain that the blood clots have been caused by the vaccine.

Meanwhile, European and British regulators have indicated that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the potential risks.
