823 unaccompanied children held by US border patrol for over 10 days

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: US reports say that over 800 children have been held for more than ten days by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The New York Post reported information was provided by an internal Department of Homeland Security document leaked to Axios Sunday saying over 823 unaccompanied migrant children have spent more than 10 days in US Customs and Border Protection custody despite the 72-hour legal limit for minors.

The New York Post said that under US law, unaccompanied minors are required to be moved from CBP to Health and Human Services care within 72 hours.

The DHS document reportedly said that as of Saturday, 3,314 unaccompanied migrant children have been in custody longer than the 72-hour legal period.

The Post said that a CBP spokesperson did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment and that a spokesperson for the White House did not immediately respond either.

The New York Post said that “the new administration’s efforts to undo former President Donald Trump’s border policies have prompted a flood of Central American and Mexican illegal migrants at the US border, including thousands of unescorted children.”

Since taking office, US president Joe Biden put a stop to the construction of the border wall and halted the “Remain in Mexico” policy under which Central American asylum applicants, now about 71,000 strong, have to await ruling in Mexico.

The Biden administration has proposed legislation that would facilitate citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the US. The New York Post said that as a result, Central Americans, particularly those from the Northern Triangle countries — El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala — have interpreted these policy moves “as a sign that this president is inviting them to cross the border.”
