By Zoila Palma: Today, the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government informed that the National Child Labour Committee will resume the performance of its mandate in April 2021.
The child labour committee is tasked with identifying incidents of child labour in Belize. The committee will also review domestic legislation, conventions, policies, and standards in Belize that relate to or affect child labour issues.
In addition, the committee is to make recommendations for amendments or development of new legislation to improve labour conditions for children in Belize.
The members of the National Child Labour Committee are representatives of multi-sectoral agencies and the Government.
The newly appointed Government representatives of the National Child Labour Committee are:
Nemencia Broaster, Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology
Silvia Gillett, Ministry of Youth, Sports and E-Governance
Rosa Urbina, Ministry of Foreign, Foreign Trade and Immigration
Other members of the National Child Labour Committee are:
Ion Cacho, National Trade Union Congress of Belize
Kim Aikman, Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Curwen Arthurs, Statistical Institute of Belize
Margaret Nicholas, National Committee for Families and Children
Marleni Montejo, Police Department
Diana Shaw, Child Development Foundation
The National Child Labour Committee meets on the first Thursday of every month.
