By Benjamin Flowers: As the outpour of grief and condolences continue to roll in at the loss of Belize Zoo founder Sharon Matola, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) has joined in to pay its respects.

“PACT joins the conservation community in mourning the passing of Ms. Sharon Matola, Founding Director of the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center. Sharon leaves behind a legacy of passion, commitment and dedication to the protection of Belize’s wildlife and inspired many to follow the cause,” PACT said.

The organization noted that, in its early programmatic years, PACT provided financial support to several wildlife conservation and research projects at the Zoo and Tropical Education Center in support of Matola’s work.

“We are forever grateful to Sharon for giving us “the best little zoo in the world.” PACT added.

Since Matola’s untimely passing on Sunday, March 21, Prime Minister John Briceno, Minister of Tourism Anthony Malher, and a number of prominent Belizeans and organizations have all expressed their sorrow, and in their own ways have tried to emphasize just how much Belize has lost due to her passing.
