US study shows AstraZeneca vaccine safe and effective

Posted: Monday, March 22, 2021. 9:01 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: A clinical trial of the Oxford/ AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine found the shot was effective in preventing COVID-19, Politico reports.

In addition, there was no reported evidence of the thrombosis-related events that European countries are concerned about.

The late-stage clinical trial indicated that the vaccine was able to prevent all severe disease and hospitalization, as well as 79 percent of symptomatic cases of COVID-19.

The vaccine was 80% effective among participants 65 years and older.

Data collected from the 32,449 participants showed “no safety concerns related to the vaccine,” said AstraZeneca.

The study was conducted after the vaccine was suspended in countries of the European Union citing safety concerns.

However, drug regulators, last week gave the all-clear for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine.

Several countries that had paused the distribution of the vaccine have now resumed administering it.
