Ex-whistleblower Delroy Herrera challenges trade unions, civil society

Posted: Tuesday, March 23, 2021. 11:25 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Delroy Herrera, now a tour guide and instructor but best known as a whistle-blower who helped expose internal corruption at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, is throwing his hat into the ring on the matter of the unions’ proposals to Government for austerity measures.

He says the unions – the Public Service Union, Belize National Teachers Union and Association of Public Senior Managers – have misrepresented the situation as a case of who has sacrificed more, and that the proposals they have made are a drop in the bucket.

“Are you so special or different that you cannot understand what the average Belizean is facing? Can you look into the eyes of the widow of Hubert Pipersburgh or the bereaved families who have lost loved ones to COVID-19, or those who have already lost jobs, and tell them they must sacrifice where you won’t?” Herrera asked.

He went on to assail the PSU and APSSM for being “comatose” in the face of the many Government scandals in the past, saying they said nothing, and should not be participating at the table in negotiations the way the vocal BNTU has.

And he wants to know who is standing up for the common man who has been neglected and forced to fend for themselves in this pandemic.

Herrera says his stance is not political but derived from the many people he has spoken to who feel their voice has not been heard.
