Ministry of Health and Wellness bringing vaccines to rural areas through mobile clinics

By Benjamin Flowers: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) will be ensuring that Belizeans in rural areas have access to COVID-19 vaccination, through mobile medical clinics, the Ministry announced today.

Maternal and Child Health Organizer for the  MOHW Dr. Nalatia Beer explained that the vaccines are being rolled out in five different phases:1A healthcare workers; 1B, persons 60 years and older; 1C, persons with special conditions; 2A, teachers and police officers; the national assembly, the judiciary, customs, and immigration personnel, 2C, tourism sector personnel; 3A, Belize Defense Force personnel, Belize Coast Guard personnel, Belize Fire Service personnel; 3B, persons with co-morbidities; 3C, Red Cross personnel, utility workers including those working for telephone companies, banks cable companies, Belize Water Service and Belize Electricity Limited; 4A all other public servants, 4b, transportation workers, and group 5, which entails all other person ages 18-55 who did not fit the first four groups.

“Traditionally we have mobile clinics for the communities/ Every community gets a few visits from the medical teams throughout the year, and this is no exception. We started out focusing on the urban setting because of the large populations but every district is now moving to provide the vaccines at community levels in the rural areas” Beer explained.

She also noted that Belize is expecting its first shipment from the COVAX facility, a total of 33,600 doses, in early April. Currently, the Ministry is still vaccinating Groups 1A, 1B and 1C, and will not officially open another phase until vaccination targets have been met in these groups.

With the rollout of vaccines in rural areas, Beer said that the Ministry is calling on the support of village councils, from district association of village councils, community health workers, and religious organizations at the community level.
