By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested and charged one of their own with the wounding of a man detained at the Racoon Street Police Station over the weekend, allegedly after he tried to escape the premises.
According to police, 26-year-old Ryan Foster, being held for theft, saw his chance when the officer guarding him took him outside to wash his hands. He made a break for it as he was not in handcuffs but was brought down by a single shot to his neck from the officer.
Foster was treated at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and remains under police guard, while the officer faces charges as part of an internal and criminal investigation.
Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch explained: “[The officer] gave us a version of the events and we saw a contrary to that after the investigation…the investigation showed other things that were not adding [up] and that is the reason he’s detained.”
Specifically, said Romero, the officer’s “use of force was excessive.”
