Belize Progressive Party calls on government to lower tax on gas

Posted: Thursday, March 25, 2021. 8:54 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) is calling on the Government of Belize (GOB) to revise the taxes being charged on fuel with a view to lower the cost and give Belizeans some reprieve from the current high prices at the pump.

The BPP notes that the effect of high fuel prices extends beyond motorists and affects the transportation and freight sectors as well as food prices and other consumer goods.

“The Belize Progressive Party, therefore, calls on the Prime Minister and his Government to revise the taxation regime on fuel and diversify the revenue base of the Government so that consumers can gain some reprieve and industry and businesses can prosper,” the Party said.

The Party also reminded the Briceno administration that it was once critical of the Barrow administration for high fuel prices and said that the party has no confidence that the high cost of fuel is reflective of world market conditions on crude oil and the subsequent acquisition costs of the refined products.

The BPP urged to GOB immediately formulate and implement the necessary policies to address the issue.
