Belize Progressive Party stands with the unions in opposing 10 percent salary cuts to teachers and public officers

By Benjamin Flowers: This week, the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) issued a message of solidarity with the joint union negotiating team working on cost-cutting measures with the Government of Belize (GOB), in opposing a 10 percent salary cut to teachers and public officers.

The BPP stressed on Wednesday that it believes the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), the Public Service Union (PSU), and the Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) have taken the correct view, that a salary cut to working-class citizens is “unjust and unwarranted.”

“The Belize Progressive Party hereby notes that the root cause of the financial difficulties being encountered by the Prime Minister and his Government is NOT of the making of Teachers and Public Officers, but has been a function of reckless, irresponsible, and dubious policy decisions taken by successive P-UDP Administrations in Government over a number of years,” the BPP said.

The Party also called on GOB to desist from any decisions that would injure and erode the earning power of teachers and public officers, and to take the full range of recommendations proposed by the unions into consideration when charting a course forward.
