Mexicans flocking into Corozal Free Zone

Posted: Thursday, March 25, 2021. 5:05 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: Despite the announcement last week by Mexico to impose restrictions on non-essential travel at its Northern and Southern borders, Chief Executive Officer, Neri Ramirez told BBN that Mexicans are flocking into the Corozal Free Zone.

Ramirez told us today that daily there are over 600 to 700 vehicles entering the Free Zone.

The Corozal Free Zone officially opened on February 2 after being closed for months due to COVID-19.

Last week, Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said the restrictions on travel and sanitary measures will be in place until midnight on April 21, 2021, but did not specify what non-essential travel signifies.

Those restrictions are in place for the country’s border with Belize, Guatemala, and the US.

Meanwhile, the land border between Mexico and Belize remains closed.
