Minister of Education explains phased re-opening of classes

Posted: Thursday, March 25, 2021. 9:02 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Education has presented a plan for the phased re-opening of classes.

The plan was approved by Cabinet and a memo was sent to all general managers, pre-primary, primary schools, chairpersons, secondary schools, ITVETS, district education managers, and president of the Belize National Teachers Union, informing that schools will be re-opening in two groups with Group 1 opening on April 12, and Group 2 reopening on May 10.

The Minister of Education Francis Fonseca said that the phased re-opening will begin on April 12th and go through until September 2021.

“THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT ALL SCHOOLS WILL REOPEN ON APRIL 12TH.  Some schools have already submitted reopening plans to the Ministry and those that meet our established criteria set out in our checklist will be given approval to reopen in April,” Fonseca noted.

Fonseca explained that the other schools will need to apply to the Ministry and once their applications have been vetted and the schools checked for readiness, then and only then will approval for re-opening be given.
