Minister of Education: “Our students have lost too much valuable classroom time”

Posted: Thursday, March 25, 2021. 9:08 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Classes for face-to-face instruction in Belize have been closed since March of 2020 when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic.

Since then, students, teachers, and parents have tried their best to adapt to distance learning using technology and the internet to communicate.

Even early childhood educators found ways to reach their students the best they can.

The Ministry of Education has now informed that the phased re-opening of classes will commence on April 12th and go through to September 2021.

Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca says that students have lost too much valuable classroom time.

“ Our students have lost too much valuable classroom time. We must make a start.

The Ministry of Education appreciates that there is no one size fits all approach to reopening of schools. We will be clear but flexible in our approach. We will respect the legitimate concerns of our students, teachers, administrators and parents and ensure that we reopen schools in a safe and responsible manner,” Fonseca expressed.

In addition, Fonseca says that parents and students will be advised by their respective schools as to exactly when their child’s school will reopen and what is expected of each student upon returning to classes.

Fonseca also explained that some schools will have a hybrid system in place while some may implement a shift system or sessions at school and others online.

Parents and students are reminded to stay tuned to information from the Ministry and their respective schools.
