Shadow Minister of Culture Shyne Barrow says he asked Health Minister Chebat to include creative artists in phase 2 of national vaccination program

By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Shadow Minister of Culture Barrow on Wednesday said he had sent Health and Wellness Minister Michel Chebat a letter asking to include creative artists in the second phase of Belize’s vaccination program because they are important to the tourism industry.

Barrow, the area representative for Mesopotamia, said “We need to get our Cultural Workers, Musicians, Artisans, Performing Artists, Dj’s, Entertainers and the like back to work.”

Barrow, who is an artist himself, said that as Shadow Minister of Culture, he will always advocate for the creative industry as it is one of our nation’s most treasured assets.

“Creatives add so much to our society not just in the Arts & Culture but to the economy,” Barrow said. “Creatives are essential Tourism Sector Service Providers. Our Tourism Product cannot be the same without the Creative Experience. Our Music, Culture, Arts & Craft are magnets that attract tourists from around the globe.”

Barrow said that because of that, he had written Chebat to request the creative industry get vaccinated along with the Tourism Sector in phase 2c.

“There is no COVID19 relief fund, no food assistance thus the least we can do is ensure our Creative Industry is vaccinated so they can get back to work to not only feed their families but continue to serve as Ambassadors for product Belize,” Barrow said.

In his letter, Barrow supported his call by saying that “there was no official listing for media personnel, but they were Vaccinated under phase 2a.”

“Creatives form an integral part of the tourism sector as indispensable service providers,” Barrow concluded. “It is essential they be vaccinated and ready to entertain and deliver their goods and services to tourists and Nationals as we prepare for a rapid increase in tourism and the reopening of the economy.”
