Belizean cyclists disqualified along with 100 other riders in Stage 1 of Panama race

Posted: Friday, March 26, 2021. 9:21 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Henry Li and brothers Jafari and Wasani Castro were disqualified in Stage One of the Clásica RPC Radio Panama race on Thursday. Only 51 of a field of 155 riders completed the first stage on Thursday.

Hao Chen Lee, coordinator of the Belizean trio, said they were put out by a spill and never made the front pack.

“A small spill occurred at mile 2. It was a technical route and with the addition of the high speeds it was an easy recipe for spills,” Lee said. “All three guys got caught up in it and were not able to reach the main pack.”

“USA pro criterium and ex world-tour riders were racing so the pace was super high at the start,” Lee said. “The lack of racing in Belize, especially in criterium makes it challenging for the boys to perform at such high level. They have three more stages to do and they sound extremely hungry for some results.”

The first stage, the Amador Grand Prix, 21 laps on a 3 km course, was won by American Travis McCabe riding for team Best Buddies Cycling.

Second place was taken by Jonathan Ogando of the Dominican Republic while Cristopher Jurado of Panama placed third.

Daniel Estevez of the United States finished fourth and Dominican Republic rider Steven Polanco followed in fifth position.

Pedro Ocampos (US) was 6th, Franklin Archibald (Panama) 7th, Juan Diego Hoyos (US) 8th, Diego Milan (DR) 9th and Connor Sailee (US) 10th.

The second stage, today at midday, is the 21 km Amador Labyrinth.

On Saturday, it’s the Metro Park – Twilight – a 45 km criterium, 25 laps on a 1.8 km course.

The final stage is set for Sunday, the Metro Park – Pope Francis Grand Prix consisting of 82.5 km, 25 laps on a 3.3 km circuit.
