By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s captain and top striker Deon McCaulay is asking for more fan support.
“Support your country no matter what,” McCaulay wrote on his Facebook page today Friday. “Other countries have it worst than us and they still support their team. Love Belize until my last breath! Thank You Belize, On to the next Game,”
McCaulay’s plea comes after Thursday’s 2-0 loss to Haiti.
McCaulay, like the entire team was “all shookup” after experiencing the armed assault on the team bus as they arrived in Haiti on Monday. But McCaulay was also able to see how much the Haitian people supported their team yesterday despite the deplorable conditions in which the great majority of Haitians live in. Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Americas and as throughout its history is now living a tumultuous moment when people are calling for the president to step down amidst rampant corruption and widespread violence. But despite all of that, the Haitians love football and go all out for their national team.
Hence, McCaulay’s plea.
The National Team players asked for Belizeans’ support before they left. They said that even though we all could not be with them that they feel the support on social media, that it feeds them and drives them.
And it’s not as if they didn’t get any. But they want and need more of it.
So, let’s do it! Let’s show them some love, Belize!
Our team plays again on Tuesday, March 30, against Turks and Caicos at 3:00 p.m. in the Dominican Republic.
