Guatemalan woman charged for murder of common-law partner

By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested and charged 53-year-old Lesbia Stephany Alvarez, of Silk Grass Village, Stann Creek District, for the murder of common-law partner Omar Cantun, 45.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvette, the head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, authorities have established that Alvarez, a Guatemalan national, and Cantun had an argument late Thursday night at their home in the village. On Friday morning, Cantun was found apparently dead, with as many as 56 stab wounds to various parts of his body.

While at least one neighbor of the couple said Cantun was being abused by Alvarez, police, according to ACP Myvette, have no instance of domestic abuse in their records; they are documenting details from the neighbors.

Interestingly, police are looking into the possibility that Alvarez did not act alone, but Myvette noted that the investigation is in its earliest stages and continues at this time despite Alvarez’s arrest.
