Mexico beats Canada 2-0, gains ticket to Olympics

Posted: Monday, March 29, 2021. 9:07 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mexico defeated Canada 2-0 on Sunday night at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, gaining a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics and a berth in the finals of the 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying championship.

Mexico, who won the last two Concacaf Olympics qualifying tournaments, will meet Honduras in the final on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

Sunday’s victory qualifies Mexico to the Olympic tournament for the third consecutive time. Additionally, having won the last two Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying championships, the victory gives them a shot for a third straight championship.

As expected, Sebastian Córdova, Uriel Antuna and Johan Vásquez had the Canadians on the edge from the opening whistle with a constant press in the box.

Mexico’s first goal came in the 57th minute off a mistake by the Canadian goalkeeper James Pantemis who gave the ball away trying to clear. Carlos Rodríguez took advantage of the gift and set it up for Antuna to smack it into the net for the Mexico 1-nil lead.

In the 66th minute, Mexico made it 2-0 off a free kick. Córdova set the ball for Vasquez who headed it onto the post. The rebound bounced off a Canadian defender and Vasquez sent it home.

After that, Canada went forward, but the Mexican defenders kept them at bay.

Mexico will now face Honduras in the Final after the Catrachos beat the United States 2-1 in the other semifinal.
