Opposition Leader calls for removal of fuel tax in Easter message

Posted: Monday, March 29, 2021. 9:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition United Democratic Party, Patrick Faber, says Government should remove the $1 tax on fuel implemented by his administration a few years ago to help ease the national burden.

In a statement issued this evening, Faber said the current administration’s “inconsiderate and uncompassionate policies” have made a tough situation even tougher and exposed “betrayal” of the electorate that voted them to power in November and March.

After 14 price hikes in four months, fuel prices including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have returned to pre-pandemic levels and worse, said Faber.

He challenged Prime Minister and Minister of Finance John Briceno to reduce the Government’s tax take, now at half the overall price, but suggested that, ironically, his refusal to do so is allegedly “in compliance with his commitment to the IMF,” not with the Belizean people.

“Government’s policies are not what it promises, but what it delivers,” said Faber, calling on the new Government to stop blaming the old one and get on with the process of national recovery.

In recognizing Easter, Faber said Christ’s death and resurrection represented “abundant hope…for all humanity,” and sent his wishes for a blessed and safe Easter.
