Prime Minister lists things to be thankful for at one-year COVID mark

Posted: Monday, March 29, 2021. 12:43 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In his weekly message to Belizeans, Prime Minister John Briceño said that Belize has much to be thankful for at this Easter time, one year after COVID-19 began laying waste to our already fragile nation.

While 317 Belizeans died from the virus over the last year, we “must move forward in hope,” buoyed by many small achievements: improvements to the Bullet Tree Falls water system, a new bridge at Calla Creek; improved living conditions at Price Barracks, Ladyville; 50 tons of cacao exported, and assistance to sheep farmers, part of the #planBelize focus on boosting rural communities.

The Prime Minister announced that Minister for Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler has produced a Tourism Recovery Plan for Belize to “bounce back and bounce forward” that is also inclusive and urgent.

“Soon, we will be able to tell the world: welcome back to Belize!” the Prime Minister said, adding that the plan includes a dashboard for tourism metrics.

The vaccination rollout continues as the country moves towards its goal of getting every adult Belizean vaccinated, the Prime Minister continued. He also mentioned plans to re-open schools, safely, after the Easter vacation.

But he warned that while Belize has brought the numbers low while other countries have retreated to lockdown, we cannot let our guard down. “Please make sure this Easter you continue to practice the safety measures: wash your hands, watch your distance, and wear your mask. And remember the Easter season is a time of repentance and renewal, and for us Christians, the great suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Have a safe and blessed Easter,” the P.M. concluded.
