By Benjamin Flowers: Ashley Enriquez, the 12-year-old Belizean girl who made local and international news when she was interviewed while crossing the border Mexico/US border on her way to the United States, has been united with her father, who lives in Houston, Texas.
Enriquez left Belize earlier this month with her mother’s blessing, in an effort to escape an increasingly difficult life in Belize. Breaking Belize News (BBN) confirmed with a relative that Enriquez is in her father’s care and is happy for it. Her mother gave an interview with Love FM today, explaining that it was her father’s request that the child make the journey.
Since US President Joe Biden took office in January, his administration has been on a sustained campaign to undo the immigration policies set in place by his predecessor Donald Trump. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, explained earlier this month that families and adults are being turned back at the border at this time, but immigration authorities will not turn back unaccompanied children.
“We’ve taken a different decision than the previous administration, we do not expel young children back into the environment of poverty and violence from which they are fleeing,” Mayorkas said.
