By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize intends to extend, for another 15 days, the current Statutory Instrument No. 9 of 2021 that speaks to quarantine regulations regarding COVID-19.
The SI would have expired this Holy Saturday, April 3.
Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat told reporters this afternoon that the curfew will be in effect for this Easter weekend as well as incumbent restrictions on social gatherings – meaning no parties, 50% capacity at restaurants, and 75% carrying capacity on public transport as well as a 9 p.m. cap on the sale of liquor.
He said the Cabinet will meet thereafter to review the numbers and decide on plans going forward.
“We all know that for Easter everybody wants to let down their guard, they want to get out and party. But we’re asking people to please continue taking precautions. Our message for this Easter is to wash your hands, wear your mask and watch your distance. Do not allow the low numbers to draw you into a lull; you have an obligation to protect yourself and protect your family,” the Minister warned.
It should be noted that at this time last year, Belize was entering National lockdown after clusters of cases were found in the West and North as well as San Pedro. That limited the first wave of cases to 18 in a month.
