Another fish kill reported in the Orange Walk district

By Benjamin Flowers: A number of dead fishes are again popping up in the New River, in the vicinity of Orange Walk Town.

Residents in the area have reported that this latest fish kill might have begun as early as Saturday, March 27. Photos of the river show a number of dead fish in the water near La Immaculada RC School as of yesterday, March 30.

The area was under investigation by the Department of the Environment (DOE) last month when a similar incident was reported.

Preliminary water analysis results at that time showed that the water temperature was too high, and the water oxygen content had been depleted at key points in the river.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) reached out to the DOE this morning for comment and was told that they will get back to us. Notably, the DOE has warned that dead fish pulled from the river is not deemed safe for human consumption and advised against buying or selling any fish that were apart of the fish kill.
