Turks and Caicos Islands coach Omar Edwards congratulates Belize on 5-0 win

Posted: Wednesday, March 31, 2021. 8:21 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “I want to take this opportunity to say congratulations to the Belizean National Team on a good victory” said Turks and Caicos Islands head coach, Omar Edwards, during the post game press conference after the 2022 World Cup qualifier in the Dominican Republic.

TCI were able hold Belize to a 0-0 draw for nearly the entire first half but appeared deflated after Carlos Bernardez scored a superb bicycle kick for Belize in the third minute of injury time. Jesse August scored in the 47th and Bernardez again in the 48th to put Belize ahead 3-0 as the second half got underway.

Edwards said his team ran out gas.

“Tough luck. In the first half we played well for 44 minutes and 30 seconds. We created two tor three opportunities, failed to capitalize and went into the changing room down 1-nil,” Edwards said. “The team came out in the second half flat. It’s a very unfortunate result.
In the first half we played some defense football. In the second half it appeared that legs give way and concentration went through the window.”

Belize scored two more goals in the last ten minutes, a header by Deshawon Nembhard and a tap in by captain Deon McCaulay.

Edwards said COVID-19 has severely affected the TCI national squad.

“We are here representing Turks and Caicos Islands without three of our best players due to the COVID-19 situation and that forced us to have some players from the second team to step up. They did well in the first 45 minutes,” Edwards said. “In the second half they lost concentration and hence they have conceded four goals.”
After their initial two games, TCI have one match left against Haiti in June but cannot advance even if they should win.

“Based on back-to-back results it is obvious that we are not going to advance,” Edwards said is dismay. “Congratulations to the Belize team and continue the good work.”

Edwards said TCI now have to look to the future: “We just take one step at a time. As we continue to look forward. We are giving youngsters a lot of experience.”
