Public Service Union attacks government over firings in the Ministry of Health and Wellness

Posted: Thursday, April 1, 2021. 4:35 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, the Public Service Union (PSU) publicly condemned the termination of several members of staff by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

The Union explained that it has received copies of termination letters for public officers at various medical facilities countrywide. The union notes that in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic the rights of medical workers need to be protected and that the situation represents flagrant political interference by the Minister of Health and Wellness in the administrative affairs of the public service.

“The continued unconscionable victimization against Public Officers by this new Administration is concerning and distressing to the PSU. We wish to point out that contrary to the Prime Minister’s assertion, the actions being perpetrated by this Administration is tantamount to herd retrenchment in certain Ministry,” the PSU said.

The Union also took issue with the “advisors” from the Minister’s transition team, saying that the advisors were engaged in bullying and intimidating public officers. The PSU said that the advisors were unnecessarily contracted to the ministry as they have brought no real value, and their presence represents bad faith from the government who seeks to cut salaries because the wage bill is too high.

“The knowledge that certain individual previously void of proper and adequate legally required working documents and employment particulars, being given unimpeded access to the Ministry of Health and Wellness offices and information, and is being permitted to sit in Senior Management meetings thus being privy to sensitive health and management decisions is alarming,” the Union added.

The PSU is calling on Prime Minister John Briceno to intervene and address the issues, and also called on public servants to take a stand when they see wrongdoing by the government.
