By Aaron Humes: The University of the West Indies (UWI) is to partner with Eon Reality for a US$25 million investment in Caribbean digital education and professional training, bringing the Silicon Valley giant into the regional market as a post-COVID education development leader.
In a statement, the university said the funds would be put toward expanding the youngest of the university’s campuses, the Open Campus, into a global campus as part of the university’s new finance vision that seeks to “convert its global reputation into sustainable revenue.”
In charge will be Dr. Luz Longsworth, Open Campus principal and pro-vice-chancellor of global affairs at UWI.
School vice-chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles commended Dr. Longsworth’s skills and negotiation and commitment to strategic vision and noted, “this is a major and very timely step for the university as it rolls out its ‘finance revolution’ according to our strategic plan. We are determined to succeed but success comes with an orderly and systematic approach and effective leadership.”
He added that the school has other major funding initiatives in the global pipeline and is actively seeking global allies to support its development work.
UWI has main campuses in Mona, Jamaica; Cave Hill, Barbados; St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, and Five Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, as well as a satellite partnership with the University of Guyana (UG).
