By Zoila Palma: United States Special Envoy, Ricardo Zuniga said today that the White House is seeking to create legal ways for Central American migrants to reach the United States.

Zuniga comments came amid a recent increase in illegal crossings.

On a visit to Guatemala, Zuniga, the envoy to the Northern triangle countries in Central America and explained that the White House was looking to offer protections to migrants and re shape the border policy, Yahoo News reports.

Zuniga met with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei and members of Government to discuss security issues as well as conditions that drive Guatemalans to migrate.

He explained that those legal means would mean that people do not have to use irregular and dangerous routes on their journey.

Zuniga is also scheduled to visit El Salvador.

In March alone, the US authorities caught over 171,000 migrants along the US-Mexico border.
