By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) said it is considering to hold the Belize National Championship for the last weekend in June if the present COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and the sport is given the go-ahead.

Cycling has not been reactivated yet in Belize, so much so that our biggest event, the Holy Saturday Cross Country Classic was not held last weekend. Cyclists, however, are training on their own awaiting the day that their sport will be allowed to reactivate for competitive races.

The announcement came included in a CFB release about its participation in the annual general meeting of the Caribbean Cycling Federation (CCF).

CFB president Orson Butler said the CCF discussed upcoming events at its virtual Annual General Meeting held recently.

Butler said that Belize intends to participate in the Pan Am Junior Games set for September in Colombia but must participate in the U-23 Championships in Cuba in June and qualify.

The CFB said that upcoming events to look forward to are:

* Elite / U-23 Caribbean Championship 2020 edition to be held in Cuba in June – qualifiers for Pan American Junior Games

* Pan Am Junior Games U-23 scheduled for September in Cali and Barranquilla, Colombia. Qualifying required.

* Junior Caribbean Championship in the Dominican Republic in mid-October.

* 2021 Elite / U23 Caribbean Championships in mid-November.

The CCF said that while participating in races and conducting events have changed, they are willingly adapting to the changes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The CCF also had conversations concerning plans on how to continue to develop cycling throughout the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, the Cycling federation of Belize said it reminds cyclists that although our country has started the vaccinations countrywide, they should continue practicing the safety guidelines mandated by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
